Future of local fire service secured

The United Kingdoms's long standing opt-out from the European Working Time Directive will remain in place after attempts by the European Parliament to phase it out failed. This is good news for the retained firefighters and the many communities they serve - including Market Harborough.

Had the opt-out been lost the retained firefighting service could have been decimated, but today's result is being acclaimed by local Liberal Democrats who campaigned to save the service.

Councillors Sarah Hill, Roger Dunton and Barbara Johnson, along with Lib Dem Chairman Phil Knowles. MEP Bill Newton Dunn and Parliamentary Spokesperson Zuffar Haq, were at the forefront of the campaign here in Harborough, calling on local residents to sign petitions and make their voices heard.

On hearing the news Phil Knowles said:

"The fact that there has been no decision to amend or remove the opt-out means the retained firefighters service as we know it has been saved. We are very pleased. The retained firefighters give so bravely and professionally to our communities, it is important however that we remain diligent and be ready to take up the campaign again should the service come under threat in the future.'

MEP Bill Newton Dunn confirmed:

''Talks between MEPs, member states and the European Commission failed to reach agreement on how to proceed. This seems to have secured the Retained Fire Fighters service - I am delighted'.'

Councillor Sarah Hill said:

"This is such an important and significant outcome, because areas like Harborough rely so heavily on retained firefighters. Had we lost the opt-out clause there is no doubt that the service as we know it would have been decimated."

Cllr Roger Dunton, who was for many years himself a retained firefighter in Harborough, was both delighted and relieved:

"To have lost the service as we know it would have had a major and detrimental impact on the community. We rely so heavily on the professionalism and dedication of those involved, it really is good news for Harborough.''
