20 mph: Don't forget the villages

7.57.18pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 29th Apr 2009

As the campaign for widespread introduction of 20 mph zones throughout Harborough grows. a plea has been made to the authorities not to forget the villages. Local campaigner Phil Knowles says there is just as much potential danger in villages as in rural areas and towns.

'' he campaign is gathering momentum, the potential for improved safety and a significant reduction in the number of accidents is well documented, but there is concern in the villages that they may not be included in any consultation and consideration. A few days ago, for example, I met residents in Great Bowden and it was clear that they feel the village would benefit from enforceable 20 mph zones.

"The Government seem to be seriously considering countrywide action and the national press documenting their ideas in some detail. In Harborough the police have been reported as supporting a 20 mph scheme across the whole of Market Harborough if it is introduced by the County Council. We now need to push to ensure that the villages are also included in the consideration.''
