"Twenty is plenty" says Lib Dem Euro MP

7.19.00pm GMT Mon 23rd Feb 2009

East Midlands MEP Bill Newton Dunn has thrown his weight behind the campaign for the introduction of 20 mph zones across Market Harborough and the village centres. He is seeking information from across Europe to support the case for better road safety here in Harborough

''My colleagues Phil Knowles and Cllr Dr Sarah Hill have championed this idea in Harborough and secured a debate by the Highways Forum last year.

"Twenty mph zones are being tried out in Portsmouth across the city. Once the scheme is a year old, the data from will be reported back to the Forum here in Harborough. I feel it important that all available information is presented for consideration, so I have also asked the authorities for data from schemes across Europe where speed reductions have been introduced in residential areas.''

Mr Newton Dunn confirmed that he will pass all information through to Phil Knowles and Cllr Sarah Hill so they can ensure it is circulated to the council officers who will be responsible for drawing up the reports for the Highways Forum.
